2012 Summer League Frequently Asked Questions

Why did registration fees go up this year?

2012 fees are exactly the same as 2011. The 2011 increase in player fess was in direct response to an increase in operating costs. In 2010 VUPS left it's summer league fees at 2009 levels, yet experienced an almost 300% increase in operating expenses compared to 2009 due in large part to the following factors:

    • a vendor increase in the basic cost of field rentals
    • the introduction of the HST
    • extended timeslots (5-9pm field bookings on all league nights)
    • booking of additional fields for additional leagues

Who can sign-up to play?

Anyone. Everyone. All of us!!

Summer league is about fun, development, and growth within the Victoria Ultimate community. It's a great way to meet new people and renew old friendships (and rivalries!).

The Co-ed Hat League on Wednesday nights is historically a fun and exciting way for new players to be introduced to the game and for local veterans to pass on their smarts.

New to Victoria this year, the separate Women's and Men's leagues on Tuesday nights will likely be a more competitive experience, but both are still open to all who are interested in improving their game.

All leagues are adult (18+ yrs).

How do I sign-up?

Option a) Online Registration (now closed)

This year, registration will only be done online through the VUPS website. This will also be the only way we accept payment (i.e., via PayPal). There will be no registration or payment of any type received at the fields this year.

Option b) Come to the Registration Party at Oak Bay Recreation Center!

Thursday, April 19th from 7-9pm. Come to upstairs lounge to register, and bring your cleats, a white shirt and a dark shirt if you want to play some pickup ultimate on the indoor turf that evening!

This is your one and only chance to register in person and pay with cash or cheque. Have we mentioned that there will be no registration or payment taken at the fields this year? We really mean it. None.

When will games be held?

Schedule information will be posted on the individual league pages once the team rosters are finalized. Check back on the league pages using the link menu on the right.

What time will games start at?

Fields are booked from 5-9 pm. A schedule of game times will be determined after registration closes. We offer two time slots per night so it is important to start games on time.

Schedules (and last minute changes to schedules/field locations) will always be posted on the vups website. You can also follow VUPS Summer League on Twitter and Facebook.

Where will I be playing?

The Tuesday night league games (both Men's and Women's) will be held at Gordon Head Middle School (1671 Kenmore Road, Victoria).

Wednesday night fields will be a combination of Central Middle School and Uplands Elementary. The registration form includes a space for you to request a specific teammate e.g. someone else to help ease childcare and carpooling concerns.

See the Fields page for maps and more information.

What equipment do I need?

  • Cleats! Non-cleated footwear (i.e. running shoes) is permitted, but not recommended as this may result in injury. Bare feet and metal-studded cleats are not permitted.
  • A disc! We will be giving a free regulation weight (175g) Ultimate frisbee disc to every player in summer league. If you need a disc right this minute, Mountain Equipment Co-op and HtO in Victoria sell regulation discs.
  • One dark shirt and one white shirt. Everyone must wear a shirt/top that fits with whether their team is "dark" or "light" for a particular game. "Skins" (ie, not wearing a shirt) does not count as light or dark.
